Commander Joynton entered the navy in 1943. He attended the University of Southern California under the Navy College Training Program. He was commisioned at the Naval Reserve Midshipman School, Notre Dame, in 1945, and served his first tour of sea duty aboard the USS Ralph Talbot DD 390. While serving aboard Talbot he participated in the Atomic Bomb Tests in the Pacific. He continued on sea duty through 1950 aboard the Samuel B. Roberts DD 823, USS Sutton DE 771, and the USS E-PCS 1431. He was accepted into the regular navy in February 1947.
    Commander Joynton served a tour of duty with the Armed Forces Security Agency in Washington DC, followed by the Communications Course at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey. Ca. He returned to sea as Operations Officer for Commander, Escort Squadron TEN. In 1955 Commander Joynton attended General Line School after which he reported to the USS Constant MSO 427 for two years of operations in the Pacific Fleet. He was then ordered to the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces, Northern Europe, Oslo, Norway, where he served in the Signals Division. He served as Executive Officer of the USS Holder DD 819 in the Atlantic Fleet from Nov 1960 until March 1962 following three months of temporary duty on the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-EIGHT.
   Prior to reporting to the USS New DD 818 Commander Joynton served as Head, Operations Division, US Naval Communications System Headquarters in Washington DC.
   Commander Joynton assumed command of the USS New DD 818 on June 26, 1965 at Livorno, Italy.
