1st Div crew at sea detail. It was a long one but enjoyable. Sn Bacas, BM3 Lyons,

In 1967 New left it more familiar waters of the Atlantic to travel to the great wide
Pacific for the first time since her commissioning. Most of us this was the
first West Pac cruise and what an experience it was. New has been thru the Suez
Canal many times over the years but this was the Panama. The Suez is a straight
canal with no locks. The Panama has to cross a mountain range and we were raised
a few thousand feet above the sea level thru a series of locks. Traverse
a large man made lake then down thru more locks into the Pacific Ocean and
north to San Diego, Pearl Harbor and beyond. |
Two views of the foc'sle during Sea Detail. |
Being pulled by one of the Mules on the tramway thru the canal. |
It is hard to see but that was a Russian merchant ship behind us. |
The famous Miraflores Locks, at the top of the world. At least the top of the Panama
Canal. |
