LCDR. GATJE is the son of Mrs. George H. Gatje and the late Dr. Gatje of Sayville, Long Island, New York. He attended Bay Shore (L.I.) High School and in June, 1952 recieved a Bachelor of Aeronuatical Engineering Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. The same month he was commissioned an Ensign, USN via the regular NROTC.
     He served aboard the USS PRESTON (DD-795) from 1952-1955 as Main Propulsion Assistant and Engineering Officer. This tour included service in Korean waters and with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
Released to inactive duty in 1955 he returned to Rensselear as an instructor and received his Master of Science in 1957. Returning to Naval Service he reported aboard the USS GALVESTON (CLG-3).
     In january 1959 LCDR. GATJE entered the Nuclear Power Training program and served tours at the prototype propulsion plant for USS ENTERPRISE (CV A(N)65) at Idaho Falls, Idaho, and as Engineer Officer of the prototype propulsion plant for USS BAINBRIDGE (DLG(N)-25) at West Milton, New York. He reported aboard as Executive Officer, USS NEW (DD-818) in September, 1963.
     LCDR. GATJE holds the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Naval Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the South Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
