Taken about 1950 from USS New of the then Super Carrier USS Midway before the angled
flight deck was added and the 5 inch guns removed. Aircraft on the deck look
like the brand new Skyraider which proved itself in Korea and was used to great
extent in the Veitnam war. The Midway was commissioned at the end of WW2, served
in the Korean War, Veitnam and Desert Storm and many conflicts in between.
Midway is now a museum at the brand new Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum in San

A behemoth in 1950 next to a Gearing class destroyer like the New was dwarfed in
years to come by the modern Super carriers like USS Enterprise CVN 65 and the newly
commissioned Ronald Reagan CVN 76 |
